(Sir) Edward Coley Burne-Jones - of The Knight's Farewell

1858.
A lot of drawings by Burne-Jones are known and quite commonly come up for auction. When he was young he was frail and couldn't paint in oils. His drawing techniques were very influenced by Ruskin's The Elements of Drawing (1857). This picture reflects this and the influence of Durer and his love of Medieval subjects - in this case Courtly Love. William Morris also greatly admired Durer and their house in Red Lion Square was filled with his engravings.
